Put your own oxygen mask on first

Can't help anyone else if you're suffocating.

"You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather."

I buckled myself in on the plane, waiting for the inevitable safety video and demonstration.

As they went through the whole spiel, one part stuck out to me. “Adjust your own oxygen mask before helping those around you.”

It might seem like common-sense advice for a smooth flight, but it holds a profound lesson for life beyond the airplane cabin. It’s a pretty good metaphor for self-care. In order to be of assistance to anyone else, you need to take care of yourself first.

We often find ourselves stretched thin, pulled in different directions by the demands of work, family, and countless other obligations. We're conditioned to put others first, to be selfless, and to prioritize their needs over our own. While these qualities are admirable, they can sometimes lead us down a path of neglecting the most crucial person in our lives: ourselves.

That oxygen mask metaphor is a good reminder that self-care isn't selfish; it's essential. Life's challenges require us to prioritize our well-being.

Why Self-Care Matters

Imagine a scenario where you're running on empty, physically and emotionally drained, yet trying to be there for your loved ones or perform at your best in your job. It's like trying to share your oxygen with someone while gasping for breath yourself.

To truly help others and excel in your various roles, you need to be at your best. Self-care isn't just about spa days or bubble baths (although those are wonderful). It's about recognizing your own needs, setting boundaries, and nurturing your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Practicing of Self-Care

Self-care looks different for everyone. For some, it's a morning run, for others, it's painting, reading, or even just taking a few deep breaths in silence. For me, it’s playing music. The key is finding what replenishes your energy, revitalizes your spirit, and makes you feel whole.

Start by carving out dedicated time for yourself. It doesn't need to be grand; even fifteen minutes of uninterrupted solitude can work wonders. Use this time to recharge and reconnect with your inner self.

Setting Boundaries

Another crucial aspect of self-care is setting boundaries. It's about saying "no" when you need to, without guilt or hesitation. It's about recognizing your limits and respecting them. It's about prioritizing your well-being, just like you would in an emergency on that plane.

Permission to Thrive

By putting on your own oxygen mask first, you're giving yourself permission to thrive. When you're well-rested, emotionally balanced, and brimming with vitality, you become a source of strength and support for those around you. You're better equipped to handle life's challenges and to offer a helping hand when it's needed.

So, as you navigate the turbulence of life, remember the wisdom of that airplane safety message. Embrace self-care as a vital practice, not a luxury. By prioritizing your well-being, you're not being selfish; you're preparing to be the best version of yourself for those you love and the adventures that lie ahead.
